4th Graders Tour Museum and Cave

Earlier this month, Rockcastle County Agent Lee Durham, assisted by their teachers, brought a party of approximately three hundred fourth-graders to Renfro Valley to go through the Pioneer Museum and later in the day took them on to a visit to Great Saltpetre Cave.
Mr. Lair personally conducted both tours. In the museum, he pointed out firearms used in various wars in which the United States has been engaged, from the French and Indian Wars up to and including World War One. Other items in the museum of historical interest were also shown and explained.
Since it would have been very difficult to keep track of so many youngsters of that age in the various passages involved in a trip ;through the cave, the children were led into the big "Auditorium'' and no further. There they were told the history of the cave itself and the stirring incidents of pioneer life and Indian days in which it had been involved. Here again the wonderful acoustics f this room were demonstrated. Speaking in an ordinary tone of voice, without mechanical amplification of any kind, Mr. Lair could clearly be heard by every child within the cave.
It was reported that the teachers had the children under perfect control and every child in the party might well have been given Excellent in deportment.
